Healthy-living Roadblocks
Wow, I have been MIA and I am sorry. The past 4-6 weeks have been crazy and I have been all over the place. My best friends turned 30, my grandma turned 90, and my brother is getting deployed so we through him a going away party! All of these events happened in different states, outside of Texas. So, when I wasn't celebrating I was in ATX working, doing laundry or sleeping. With that being said, it did not leave much time for working out ( I put my membership on hold) and I d

When brainstorming topics for this week's blog I kept coming back to hydration. Last week I discussed its importances and different ways to tell if you're hydrated. This week, let's talk about ways to stay hydrated, besides water. We all know water is important and we should drink it throughout the day, I also discussed this last week. Besides water, did you know you can get fluids through the foods you eat?! When consuming RAW fruits and veggies you are putting more into you

Hydration. This is not a new topic and something our bodies remind us about, but do we really need to drink 8 cups of water each day? The short answer, NO! It could be more, but it could also be less. There are many factors that go into the amount of fluids a person needs. This will depend on your age, sex, activity level, geographic location, etc. If you are a healthy adult that lives in the south and you work outside, you will need more fluids than someone that is built the

3 Simple Tips To Improve Road Trips
Summer is nearly here, which means road trips with the kids (or just your husband who qualifies as a kid)! If you travel like I did growing up it means minimal stops and meals in the car. We always wanted to get to our destination ASAP and take full advantage of our vacation. This meant that all meals and snacks were consumed in the car. This is how much fun meal time was in my car: I didn't eat meat, one brother only eats meat and no fruits and veggies, and the other would r

Healthy Meals Without the Meal Prep
Meal prepping is extremely popular right now and it has every right to be! It helps to keep you on track, the meals are usually healthier, and makes your weekdays much easier! Meal prepping also helps to keep you accountable! Accountability is especially needed in the beginning and helps us all so stay on track. I have found my clients are able to reach their goals much easier when they are held accountable. But, what happens when we don't have a hour or two on a Sunday to me

Why You Should Never Diet Again
For centuries people have been putting themselves on diets. There are many diets out there: Atkins, ketogenic, nutrisystem, paleo, Jenny Craig, etc. All of them have the same concept: restricting food until a goal is reached, but THEN WHAT??? For most people weight gain and often it is more then they lost. No one likes when they are told they cannot have something. When you tell a child they cannot have a toy they whine and beg to get it. You either give in and get it for the

What Has Been Fueling Me
Good morning! Last week was out. of. control! My brother was in town and we were extremely busy all week, plus I was working! The week was spent sightseeing, hanging out, and enjoying a few beers! Craft beers are becoming extremely popular, especially in ATX, and my husband and brother are OBSESSED with trying new beers. Therefore, the majority of the week I was tagging along with them and trying out new breweries! We ate out for most dinners; the majority of the meals I orde

What I ate this week
This week I had a lot more fun in the kitchen. It was cold and rainy on Sunday so it left me with a lot of time in the kitchen!! It has been a goal of mine to try 1 or 2 new recipes this week, and I did! For breakfast I made banana bread! This is my husband's favorite breakfast item. He is not a big breakfast eater, so whenever our bananas are too ripe I like to make it for him! I swap out the flour for whole wheat and add some flax seeds to make it a little healthier. I had

What I ate this week..
Just because I am a dietitian does not mean that I eat perfectly. I thought I'd give you a snapshot of what I ate this week. I was extremely busy this week, which made for some interesting meals. On Saturday we had some friends over and had a cookout. Per usual, I had a ton of leftovers. I am not one for throwing out foods. Therefore a lot of our dinners were based around what we had in our fridge. Sunday was a little bit of a mess. I felt a little under the weather after the

Portioning Healthy Proteins
I hope you all had a great first week of National Nutrition Month! Last week we discussed increasing your fruits and vegetables. As a reminder, they are nutrient-rich foods and provide a wide variety of vitamins and minerals. They tend to be lower in calories and higher is fiber, which is why your half of your plate should contain them. Now, what goes on the other half of your plate? You should have 1/4 protein and the other 1/4 a starch. The image to the left is an excellent
